Choosing the Right Color Palette
The color of your home can say a lot. It can convey our personality and act as a means to communicate the life that we live. It can affect the mood that we are in from day to day. Without thinking we associate certain colors to the way that we feel. Red typically suggests love and passion, while when someone is down we refer to them as having the “blues”. Grays can make you think of cloudy days and yellow of sunshine. These same references can be made with the color of your walls as well. When considering updating your color, consider the message that you want to receive each day.
The color scheme that you decide on should also compliment your space. If painting a smaller room, stick with lighter colors in order to make your space seem larger. For more spacious rooms you can experiment with mid to darker colors. Yes, we said experiment! It is recommended that you always paint a swatch of your color(s) on the wall before deciding to paint the entire area. Many factors can change the way you view your selected color. You may find that it looks slightly different than expected once it is on the wall. The color may look darker than you thought once the lights go down or may be too bright when the sun rises. The outlook of a painted wall can vary depending on the light in the room, so try it out first.
Here are some tips when it comes to choosing the perfect color palette:
-
- Warm tones are best with rooms that have an abundance of natural light. Beware though, without the availability of natural light it can contradict the look that you were hoping for and give off more of a cold two dimensional feeling.
- Cool tones such as blues and greens offer a refreshing touch. Blue is said to be a very trusting and calming color. Greens are indicative of earth, nature and purity. Purple or shades of violet can provide elegance and intellect to your room.
- Neutrals work well when natural light is not available. They can compliment a wide array of accent colors and are good choices for smaller spaces. Neutrals consist of black, while, beiges and grays. These are great colors to work with if your furniture or décor is quite colorful providing the pop that you want, while not being overpowered by a bright wall.
- Complementary shades are colors that are opposite on the color palette wheel such as orange and blue or yellow and purple. These colors are bold and are impactful. Be careful not to overuse these shades.
- Analogous shades are very similar colors that are neighbors on the color palette wheel such as red and pink or blue and green. When used in combination, these colors can be very synchronized and harmonious.
Choosing the right color scheme for your room or even your entire home can become quite the obstacle. There are an endless possibility of colors and hues to choose from, but enjoy the process. That vase you got on vacation, the unique piece of furniture or those funky pillows that you love can all provide the perfect motivation for your room. Inspiration for a wall color can be found in anything.
