TODAY’S OPEN KITCHEN DESIGN
Today's trend in Kitchen and home design is the "open concept plan". Consumers want rooms that feel larger by flowing into adjacent spaces creating one large living area. This living space often encompasses the Family Room, the Kitchen and the Eating Area or Breakfast Nook.
Formal Living Rooms and Dining Rooms have all but disappeared and are a concept of the past. Today's family lifestyles have become more informal. We value our time and want to be close to family and friends as we prepare meals, eat and entertain all in the same space, and often at the same time. Space in the home needs to be multi-functional and in addition provide convenience for busy families on the go. As children finish up their homework and prepare for soccer practice, typically the parent is whipping up a quick meal for dinner before running out the door. This is where the handiness of an open floor plan comes into play!
In order to achieve this open concept, this means we need to eliminate walls that create barriers between our living spaces. With the elimination of walls storage then can become a challenge, especially in the kitchen. Where we once had wall mounted overhead cabinets, we now must find a space for our dishes, cookware and food items. The following accessories are just a few of the options available to maximum the storage and functionality in the base cabinets of a kitchen.
We've all seen the traditional Lazy Susan, used for decades to maximize storage in an otherwise dead corner of the kitchen. Here are a few new takes on this innovation.
Pull-out Cabinet Organizers: Utensils pull-outward keeping them organized and easily accessible, rather than rolling around in a drawer.
Blind Corner Pullouts: Eliminate that dead space in the back corner of your cabinetry without being forced to have a round Lazy Susan contraption. This organizer maximizes the amount of square space that can be used for storage in your cabinet with pull-out baskets that then slide over to allow for rear baskets to be pulled out as well, proving full view of all contents.
Spice Rack: Double the usage by taking that decorative post or 3" filler in your Kitchen cabinetry and turning it into a spice and condiment pull-out!
Pull-out Dividers: Store your baking sheets, pizza pans and muffin tins in pull-out tray dividers. No more stacked pans in the back of your cabinet because it never fails that you always end up needing the one on the bottom of the pile! This eliminates the need to unload ever pan each time looking for the one you need.
Trays: Utilize otherwise hard to access storage with a tray dividers. They can help you organize pot and pan lids, cookbooks, cutting boards and other Kitchen necessities.
Pull-out Drawers: Keep your items from rolling around, tipping or falling out of your cabinet with pull-out drawers. You can even store your small appliances that you may not use every day like electric can openers, coffee pots and tea brewers for easy access when you need them.
Custom Organizers: From cutlery dividers, knife organizers with built in cutting boards, spice trays, wine storage and more!
Since the Kitchen is now an integral part of the living area in the home, islands with plenty of seating are the trend. Dual height islands that separate your cooking and serving space from the place settings are one option to consider. Many people elect to design their Kitchen island with additional storage, shelving and a trash can pull-out to keep everything tidy. Kitchen designs and customizable options are more flexible today than ever, so plan your Kitchen around your specific needs!
